COORS BREWERS SET TO SUPPORT 2007 NEWPORT POOL OPEN

New Worthington Doubles? tournament unveiled
Worthington also set to sponsor 2007 Newport Pool Open

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Coors Brewers Limited are the new sponsors of the 2007 Newport Pool Open, which was organised for the first time by NDP Publicity Services in 2006.

The subsidiary of Molson Coors, the world?s fifth largest brewing company, has announced that the Midlands number one ale brand ?Worthington? will become the title sponsor of the 2007 Newport Pool Open and the brand will back the new Newport Doubles? Open tournament.

?We are delighted to be involved in sponsoring both these exciting competitions,? said Coors Regional Director Derek Longstaff. ?Pool is a popular sport and fits in well with our local sales strategy. Last year?s Newport Open was very well organised and laid the foundations for a natural expansion in 2008. Another popular pub sport is darts and we have just launched the Worthington?s Masters nationally where customers can get a chance to play against 13-times World Champion Phil ?The Power? Taylor?.

Last year?s inaugural singles? competition attracted 32 of the finest pool players from the Newport & District Pool league and was won by Newport?s Paul Trevor. He beat Ray Talbot 3-1 in a tense final at the Railway Tavern last October.

This year?s two-tier competition will be open to players who live within a 10-mile radius of Newport, with separate registration required for both the singles? and doubles? tournaments.

Entry fee for the singles? competition is ?5.00 per person and ?10.00 per pair for the doubles competition, with all entry fees going into the prize fund. Entries close on Monday, July 30th and the first round draw for both competitions will take place the following week.

Registered players will nominate their home venue and players drawn to play at home will benefit from home advantage. Away players are responsible for contacting their opponents to arrange the relevant fixtures. Each match will be played over the best of five frames.

Match winners must send notification of the result by text message to 07831 123153 or by post to NDP Publicity Services, NCH Building, Upper Bar, Newport, Shropshire, TF10 7EH.

Progress tables and an update of the draw will be issued during the course of the tournament to landlords of relevant venues and published in the sports? pages of the Newport Advertiser.

Subject to final numbers entered in both competitions, there will be a substantial prize fund, bolstered by a cash input from Coors Brewers. A portion of the sponsorship fee will also be donated to Newport Cottage Care Centre.

Based upon a starting number of 64 players and 32 pairs for the doubles, the first prize for the 2007 Worthington Newport Open Pool Champion will be an engraved trophy and a cash prize of ?200. The Worthington Doubles? Champions will receive a brand new trophy and a joint cash prize of ?200. Runners-up will take away ?150 and there will be a prize for the third-place play-off winner of ?75.

The semi-finals and 2007 Newport Pool Open Final will be played over the best of seven frames and will take place at the Navy Club, Bellman?s Yard, Newport on Tuesday, October 16th from 07.30 pm (subject to confirmation). The third-place play-off will be over the best o five frames and the official prize presentation will take place immediately after the final.

?Pool in Newport has a very strong following and the league is well-supported from players in Newport, Gnosall, Norbury, Lilleshall, Tibberton and Muxton,? said event promoter Neil Perkins of NDP Publicity Services.

?Now that the Newport Pool League has finished, this is an ideal opportunity for individual players and doubles partners to take part in this exciting competition. I hope that all players who regularly play in the Newport & District Pool League will take part in both competitions. The more entries we have the bigger the prize fund??

Event organisers are asking individual pub and club landlords to be responsible for collecting the monies from their players and forwarding either to NDP Publicity Services or to Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport.

Completed entry forms from each venue should be sent as soon as possible to NDP Publicity Services, NCH Building, Upper Bar, Newport, Shropshire, TF10 7EH or delivered with monies to Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern, Upper Bar, Newport, Shropshire.
