FIRST CLASS PERFORMANCE BY DOMINANT PERRY

‘Hurricane’ Hazeley safely into round two

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The first round of the 2007 Worthington’s Newport Pool Open headed into its final week with one top player booking his place in Sunday’s second round draw at the expense of last year’s beaten semi-finalist.

King’s Head philatelist Ian Perry stamped his authority on his game against last year’s beaten semi-finalist Andy Dean from the start and delivered a first class performance to perforate Dean’s chances of reaching the final.

The game was over in less than 10 minutes, as Perry put on a remorseless potting display to win in three straight frames. “It was one of those nights where I just couldn’t miss,” said Perry.

Neil ‘Hurricane’ Hazeley didn’t even need to pot a ball to beat G. Taylor from the Junction Inn in Norbury. The Lilleshall Sports Centre player progressed to the second round when Taylor was forced to withdraw from the competition. Both players were expected to complete their respective doubles matches this week.

In the doubles’ competition, Perry and son Robert were in fine form to defeat Charlie and L Hayward at the Sutherland Arms in Muxton in four frames. Perry senior was in confident mood after the game and was already rumoured to be arranging a trip to Australia to avoid a clash with finals’ night! “I plan on winning both competitions,” boasted the stamp dealer.

Remaining matches are being played this week and all winners must send notification of the result by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the match score and players’ names. The second round draw for both competitions will be made on Sunday, September 2nd.
