PINK AND PERRY STROLL INTO POOL QUARTER-FINALS

Whittingham beats Smith in five-frame marathon

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Hinstock?s Colin Pink and Newport?s Ian Perry were the revelations of week seven of the 2007 Worthington?s Newport Pool Open, as both players strolled into the last eight of the singles? competition without dropping a single frame.

In-form Pink sent out an ominous message to the surviving players by outclassing a shell-shocked Tavern landlord Dave Wilkinson in a one-sided encounter. Wilkinson had produced some consistent, solid play to dispose of Greg Heathcote in the second round, but was no match for the snooker player on this occasion.

Meanwhile, stamp dealer Ian Perry maintained his dogged progress towards the final with a three-frame demolition of Andy Bowsher at the King?s Head. Perry has been talking up his chances of winning both the singles? and doubles? competitions for several weeks and his three-frame dismantling of Bowsher was a second first class performance in the space of a month.

The King?s Head was also the scene of Irene Wittingham?s passage into the quarter-finals, after her hard-fought victory over the stubborn Trevor Smith. The match went to a decider, before the Telford league player ground out a gritty fifth-frame passage into the last eight.

Second round matches in both competitions must be completed by September 30th. Winners must send notification of the result by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the match score and players? names.

The Worthington Newport Open Finals? night has been moved back a week to Tuesday, October 23rd at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport.
