TALBOT KEEPS HIS COOL TO

SEE OFF WOBBLY LONGSTAFF

Heathcote/Lycett and Taylor duo through to doubles’ semi-finals

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Last year’s beaten finalist Ray Talbot keep his cool under pressure to see off the challenge from Ben Longstaff and book his place in the quarter-finals of the 2007 Worthington’s Newport Pool Open.

The 3-0 score line flattered to deceive, because Longstaff found himself on the black in all three frames, but could not come up with the decisive shots needed to make a difference. “I bottled it,” admitted the Lilleshall Sports’ Centre player. “I had my chances and failed to put them away, but all credit to Ray, he will take some beating.”

The eagerly-anticipated clash between Mick Collins and Edd Keenan and Anthony Heathcote and Andy Lycett at the King’s Head turned into a one-sided affair, with the visitors romping to a three-nil win in just 14 minutes.

Keenan started well for the King’s Head team and potted five balls. Lycett replied with six, but Collins missed a crucial red and left Heathcote to cut a long yellow in along the cushion and pot the black for a one-nil lead.

Keenan missed a crucial red in the second frame to give Lycett a six-ball clearance and, in frame three, Keenan attempted a snooker behind two reds, but hit the ball too soft. Heathcote used his two shots to full advantage to clear the table and book his and Lycett’s places in the doubles’ semi-finals.

The Junction’s Terry Taylor continued his resurgent form by teaming up with T. Taylor to win a five-game thriller at Norbury. The match against the in-form Colin Pink and his doubles partner went to a decider, but the Taylor duo managed to hold on to take a sensational win and deprive Pink his opportunity of reaching both the singles’ and doubles’ finals.

Second round matches in both competitions must be completed by September 30th. Winners must send notification of the result by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the match score and players’ names.

The Worthington Newport Open Finals’ night has been moved back a week to Tuesday, October 23rd at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport.
