KING’S HEAD DISPOSE OF WHEATSHEAF TO MAINTAIN LEAGUE LEAD
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head maintained a three-point lead in the Newport Pool League as the season reached its half-way point last week.
The Chetwynd End outfit secured a straightforward 5-1 win over the Wheatsheaf at Pave Lane to record their seventh win from nine starts this season. Matt Collins was the pick of the field with a superb display of top class pool according to several onlookers. “Matt was awesome tonight, absolutely superb,” said a team spokesman, although a Wheatsheaf player reckoned that several of the games had gone down to the final black.
Defeat to Lilleshall Sports Centre in the first round of the Newport League Cup has been the King’s Head’s only loss so far this season.
The Audco Sports & Social Club maintained the pressure with a comfortable 5-1 victory over the New Inn, with former Newport Open champion Paul Trevor putting together a sensational eight-ball clearance to set the Bellman’s Yard team on their way.
The Shakespeare put last week’s hammering at the Sutherland Muxton behind them to secure a 4-2 win over Junction B to move back into third place in the league.
In the other two weekly fixtures, the Junction A beat the Navy Club 4-2 and the Boat were edged out of a tricky home encounter 4-2 at Gnosall by the in-form Sutherland Muxton, who consolidated their fifth place in the league.
