SHAKE BOSS THREATENS TO QUIT AS AUDCO RUN RIOT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco shocked the Shakespeare with a 5-1 win at Bellman’s Yard in the latest round of matches in the Newport Pool League. The result lifted the Audco into a joint lead with the King’s Head at the top of the table, but pushed the Shakespeare down to fourth place.

Don Brennen got the visitors off to a good start with a hard-earned frame win against Jack Jones, but the writing was already on the wall when Audco sent out the big guns.

Paul Trevor squeezed past Matt Hestor – in a frame that took just under an hour – and Andy Lycett put the home side 2-1 up by beating Luke Jones. Shakespeare captain Mick Andrews was already chewing his finger nails when Anthony Heathcote pipped Ben Clewns to send the home side into raptures.

It got worse for the visitors, when Trevor and ‘ice man’ John Williams made it 4-1 with a win over Hestor and Clewns. Andrews was already threatening to quit when young Tom Sayce and Lycett disposed of Rich Young and Carl Fletcher to complete the rout and send the high-flying Audco into orbit.

LSC won a gruelling and vital encounter against Junction A at Norbury, a result that takes the Newport side back into third place in the league. Neil Perkins potted six from the break in the opening frame, only to see a stubborn Sion Richards force a re-rack situation after 20 minutes. Perkins was again on top in the next frame and duly edged LSC into a one frame lead.

Keith Rogers is the form player in the Junction side and he played a solid frame of quality safety play to sneak past a dejected Greg Heathcote, but Ben Longstaff managed to overcome Ian Mason to put the visitors in front again after another marathon frame. Steve Roycroft levelled the scores with a defiant win against Nick Clewley, when the away player hit a vital safety shot a little too hard and gave Roycroft his first and only real opening.

The tension was paramount in the doubles and Heathcote and Longstaff managed to sneak the frame against Rogers and Mason, when Longstaff potted a nervy black into the corner pocket.

With a draw already confirmed as the worst scenario, Perkins and Clewley found themselves in deep trouble in the sixth frame, but managed to juggle the balls around the pockets to edge into a strategic advantage. When Roycroft and Hyla Marklew made one crucial safety error, Clewley was on hand to seal the crucial frame and the three points.

The matches between the New Inn and the Navy Club and the Boat Gnosall and Junction B were both postponed.
