BOAT THUMP NEW INN AS LSC MISS OUT ON BONUS POINT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head and Shakespeare maintained their slim challenges for the Newport & District Pool League title with 4-2 victories over the Sutherland Muxton and the Navy Club.

But the result of the week was the Boat Gnosall’s 6-0 demolition of the New Inn. The Boat have been in a rich vein of form in recent weeks and still have an outside chance of finishing inside the top three.

The King’s Head remained eight points behind the Audco with two games in hand by beating the ‘smokies’ 4-2 at Muxton, although it was a disappointing evening for the usually consistent Mick Collins, who lost both his matches.

The Shakespeare made heavy weather of beating the Navy Club 4-2 at Upper Bar, but remain well in touch with the King’s Head as they challenge for second place. The two teams are set to meet next week in what could be a crunch encounter.

Lilleshall Sports Centre needed a morale-boosting win against lowly Junction B before their cup final appearance against the Audco, but their 5-1 away win was a flattering scoreline. Neil Perkins was not in good form and made heavy weather of seeing off a stubborn challenge from Glenn Taylor to open the visitors’ account.

Greg Heathcote was a little more convincing against Terry Taylor, although the Junction B player very nearly caused an upset after a sensational snooker at the business end of the frame. Ben Longstaff edged through against ‘Jaz’ in another frame that could have gone either way and Nick Clewley gave the visitors a 4-0 with victory over John Owen.

Heathcote and Longstaff made no mistake in making it 5-0 against Mick Ashforth and Sue Fletcher but, for the second time this season against the Junction B, LSC lost the last frame and the bonus point for the whitewash. Clewley made a potting mistake from the break, Perkins failed to leave a ball secure later in the frame and Glenn Taylor was on hand to pot a splendid double into the middle pocket. LSC skipper Dave Price was unavailable to play because of work commitments.

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that league tables and player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.
