AUDCO CLINCH LEAGUE POOL TITLE IN EMPHATIC STYLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Audco clinched the 2007-2008 Newport & District Pool League title in emphatic style by crushing the Junction B 6-0 to claim a third whitewash of the season and become the first league team to reach the 50-point barrier.

The Bellman’s Yard outfit were never troubled by the Junction side and head into the final home fixture against the New Inn next week in buoyant mood.

“The lads are on a high,” said unbeaten skipper Andy Lycett, who is heading for the player of the season award at the annual prizegiving. “We have achieved the league and cup double in our first full season. Now we hope to enter two teams in the league next time and give our young lads Jack Jones and Tom Sayce the chance to play regular first team pool.”

Shakespeare were stunned into a 4-2 home defeat by the inconsistent Sutherland Muxton, which avenged their defeat in the third-place play-off for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy. The defeat also dented the Shakespeare’s chance of claiming the runners-up spot in the league. The Upper Bar side remain second, but King’s Head have two games in hand.

Junction A were awarded a walkover win over New Inn when the Stafford Road side telephoned to postpone the match just 10 minutes before the game was scheduled to be played.

“We wouldn’t have minded if they had let us know beforehand,” insisted Junction captain Hyla Marklew. “But the catering was all arranged and our team was in place for the game.”

League rules do not cover this eventuality, but league co-ordinator Neil Perkins has introduced a ‘5-1 rule’ for teams that repeat this in future and Junction A were duly awarded a 5-1 win.

Lilleshall Sports Centre’s visit to the Wheatsheaf was postponed because three of the LSC team line-up had business commitments and were unable to play. The Shakespeare’s defeat means that LSC can still steal second or third positions at the end of the season.

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that league tables and player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.
