AUDCO WRAP UP WINNING SEASON WITH 6-0 ROUT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Audco clinched a fourth 6-0 victory of the season against the New Inn at Bellman’s Yard to bring the curtain down on a wonderful first year in the Newport & District Pool League.

They managed to finish 20 games unbeaten, with skipper Andy Lycett winning all 14 of his singles matches, which was enough to earn him the player of the season award. The team were presented with the new Coors Trophy and individual awards after the game at the Audco.

Tom Sayce led the way against the New Inn with victory over Mike Stevens and they were soon banking the three points, when Jack Jones, Anthony Heathcote and Colin Pink recorded wins over Shaun Borrett, Nathan Passey and Brad Borrett.

Former Newport Open Champion Paul Trevor lost his mother days before the game, but the brave Audco star managed to team up with Pink to make it 5-0 against Stevens and Shaun Borrett, with Lycett teaming up with his promising young son Callum to complete the whitewash and collect the bonus point.

“Obviously are sympathies are with Paul and his family at this time, but I would like to thank all my players for their superb effort this season,” said Lycett. “We won the league from a core of six players, with a few people helping, or maybe not helping, at the start of the year! Next year we will split our team into two and have an A and a B team. We’re practising already!”

The Shakespeare managed to earn a 6-0 win over Junction B at Norbury, but it looks as though the Upper Bar side will be edged out of second place in the league by the King’s Head. The Chetwynd End outfit beat the Wheatsheaf 4-2 and only need one win from their remaining two delayed games to seal second place.

Junction A’s late bid for the top three just came up short, despite the Norbury side taking a 5-1 win at the resurgent Navy Club. Steve Roycroft, Sion Richards and Keith Rogers got the away side off to a winning start against Norman Riley, Gerry Nunn and Jez Price, but Alan Pritchett pegged the visitors back with a good win over Ian Mason.

Roycroft and Richards sealed the match in the first doubles’ encounter against Riley and Nunn and Rogers and Mason won the final rack against Pritchett and Price. Junction A are now reliant on Lilleshall Sports Centre being beaten in one of their last two games if they are to take fourth place.

Attention now turns to the 2008 Coors Newport Pool Open and the Worthington Newport Doubles Open. Entry forms have been sent to public houses and clubs in the area and entries close on Friday, July 4th.

The draw will be made on Sunday, July 6th, but there will be no seeding. The draw will be made on an FA Cup-type basis at 8pm at the Railway Tavern on the Sunday evening.

The fixture list for the 2008-2009 Newport Pool League season will start on Wednesday, November 12th. It promises to be a cracking season, with interest already shown from all this year’s teams, in addition to the Honeysuckle, Swan, Sutherland Tibberton, Royal Oak, Navigation, Red Lion Edgmond and second sides from both the Audco and the Shakespeare.

“Maybe there is a case for two divisions in the future, with the extra fear factor and pressure of promotion and relegation,” admitted series organiser Neil Perkins of NDP Publicity Services. “A final list of teams will be required by the end of August.”

Would teams ensure that all match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern after games to ensure that the final player statistics are as accurate as possible. Please also text the result to 07831 123153.
