ENTRIES FLOOD IN FOR 2008 COORS NEWPORT POOL OPEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Attention in Newport & District pool circles now focuses on the 2008 Coors Newport Open and Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open competitions. The closing date for entries is Friday, July 4th and the draw will be made at 8pm on Sunday, July 6th.

Early entries have already been received from the 2006 and 2007 Newport Open champions, Paul Trevor and Colin Pink, and the defending doubles champions Andy Lycett and Anthony Heathcote, with many more names scheduled to enter the competition from all over the Newport & District area. A limit has been put at 128 singles entrants and 64 doubles pairs.

Luke and Charlie Hayward and Kim and Dave Worrall from the Sutherland Muxton have already entered both the singles and doubles competitions and series promoter Neil Perkins will line up with LSC league colleague Nick Clewley in the doubles, in addition to both players taking part in the singles competition.

LSC colleagues Ben Longstaff, Greg Heathcote, Dave Price and last year’s beaten quarter-finalist Neil ‘Hurricane’ Hazeley are expected to enter both competitions, while over 50 other regular league players from as far afield as Cannock, Gnosall, Norbury and Telford and several newcomers have already stated their intention of entering the prestigious competitions.

“We look as though the league will be extended from 11 teams to 16 or even 18 next time,” enthused Perkins. “The Coors competitions give any newcomers a chance to get some practice in before the league starts again in the autumn.”

Pubs and clubs are requested to drop completed forms and monies off in a sealed envelope at the Railway Tavern, clearly marked for the attention of Neil Perkins, 2008 Newport Pool Open.

Anyone who has not yet received a form or who has mislaid it, should contact Neil Perkins on 07831 123153 as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, two of the remaining games in the Newport Pool League were played last week. The Boat completed their disappointing campaign with a 4-2 win at the Navy Club to confirm seventh place in the league and the Wheatsheaf entertained Lilleshall Sports Centre at Chetwynd Aston. The 3-3 result deprived LSC of a fourth place finish.

Ian Trevor won a marathon encounter against Dave Price to put the home side 1-0 up, but Neil Perkins somehow snatched a win from the jaws of defeat to upset Al Harvey and level the match. Greg Heathcote won a tactical battle against Nigel Sandbrook, but Paul Skitt completed an excellent four-ball clearance to beat Ben Longstaff and level the scores at 2-2.

Chris Cooper and Sandbrook managed to beat Longstaff and Heathcote to put the Wheatsheaf within sight of an excellent win, but Perkins and Price eventually edged a scrappy sixth frame against Skitt and Oddy to level the final outcome, but could only watch as the Junction A sealed fourth place with their late run of form.

Would teams ensure that outstanding league match forms are returned to the Railway Tavern to ensure that the final player statistics are as accurate as possible.
