COORS NEWPORT POOL OPEN SET FOR

GRIPPING WEDNESDAY NIGHT FINALE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The 2008 Coors Newport Pool Open will reach a dramatic conclusion at the Audco Sports and Social Club in Newport on Wednesday, October 22nd.

The first name into the semi-finals was Andy Lycett, who beat the Junction’s Keith Rogers 3-2 in a thrilling match at the Audco last Wednesday evening.

Mick Collins was a 3-1 winner of the all-King’s Head clash against Ian Perry, while Ian Mason also reached the last four in style. The Gnosall player stunned the fancied John Williams with a 3-2 victory at the Audco to continue his remarkable run in the tournament, where he has already beaten defending champion Colin Pink. Ed Keenan and Anthony Heathcote played the last quarter-final match after we closed for press.

The draw for the semi-finals will be made at 6.45pm at the Audco on Wednesday evening and the games will take place straight away. The losers will play in a third place play-off from 21.00hrs on finals’ night, prior to the Coors Newport Open final that concludes the evening’s action at around 22.30hrs.

Anthony Heathcote and Andy Lycett booked their places in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles final with a convincing 3-0 victory over Mick Collins and Ed Keenan at the King’s Head.

Keenan potted four quick balls in the opening frame, but Heathcote completed a sensational clearance to seal the frame. Lycett set the visitors up for a 2-0 lead with six early pots, but the third frame was a cagey affair, with Collins having his chances to get the home side back in the match, only to see Lycett keep the double dream alive with the final black.

The second doubles semi-final will be played this week between Ian and Rob Perry and Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote, with Longstaff returning from honeymoon in Hawaii to play the delayed fixture.

The final will take place from 21.50 hrs on Wednesday, October 22nd at the Audco Social Club, with the third-place play-off taking place earlier in the evening.

Spectators and members of all other league teams are all welcome to attend the evening and Coors are hoping to run a Carling promotion during the course of the matches.

The presentation of cash prizes to the top three in each category and the Coors Newport Open and Worthington’s Newport Doubles’ trophies will be made as soon as the singles final has been completed.
