AUDCO B CONTINUE UNBEATEN RUN IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Audco B moved into the outright lead in the 2008/2009 Newport & District Pool League after the fourth week of matches, but Audco A cruised into second position after a 5-1 rout at Wrockwardine Wood Football Club.

The King’s Head were held to a 3-3 draw by the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd End and there were useful away wins for the Navigation A and Junction B.

Jack Dicken and Tom Sayce got Audco B off to a winning start at Bellman’s Yard against the all-ladies Shakespeare B side, but Jack Jones discovered what the ‘L’ means after your name, when he was defeated in a thriller by an ecstatic Hannah Evans. Luke Jones beat Kim Rigby in the final singles’ rack and the youngsters closed out the match in the doubles to record a 5-1 win.

Neil Hallett, Ian Perry, Irene Whittington and Brad Borritt went 3-1 up against the Wheatsheaf, only for the unbeaten draw specialists to seal both doubles matches – a superb pot on the black by M Hodgkinson doing the damage in the final rack.

Don Brenan and Andy Pots set the Shakespeare on their way to what looked like three points against the Navigation A, but the away side had other ideas. N. Holmes and Scott Podmore hit back to level the match and the Gnosall side won both the doubles matches to seal maximum points and their first win of the season. Junction B also secured a useful 4-2 away win at Navigation B.

Defending champions Audco A needed a big win to stay in touch with the leaders and a 5-1 win at Wrockwardine Wood was just the tonic they needed. Kim Worrall managed to win the second singles’ match for the home side against Jon Mason, but Colin Pink, Andy Lycett and Mick Beech were on form in the rout, returning veteran Beech continuing his impressive start to the season.

In the final match of the night, the Railway Tavern faced a daunting trip to Norbury to tackle Junction A. Skipper Hyla Marklew edged James Searles to put the home side one up, only for Andy Richardson to beat the in-form Ian Mason to level the match.

Keith Rogers got the better of Ben Clewes in frame three and Sion Richards made it 3-1 to the home side with a win over Aaron Brotherton. Honours were shared in the doubles, with Richardson and Brotherton working well to beat Mason and Rogers, but the Norbury side collected the all-important three points and moved up to fifth in the league table. Both Lilleshall Sports Centre and the Navy Club had a bye.

All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Please note that the Audco (Barley) B will play from the Audco this season and not from the Barley, as previously intended.

Fees must be paid by the end of December and left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern for the attention of Neil Perkins. Could the team that paid its fees and did not leave a note, please identify themselves asap.
