KING’S HEAD A CLAIM MAIDEN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Mick Collins’s King’s Head A confirmed the Newport & District Pool League title for the first time after beating the Royal Navy Club, 1-5, at Bellman’s Yard on Wednesday night.
With one game left to play, the Chetwynd End side cannot be caught by Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms, who also managed a similar away scoreline at a disappointed Wheatsheaf B. In the absence of the skipper, Ian Perry, Graham Tigwell, Irene Whittington and Jamie James clinched the vital frames to seal the title.
“It has been a great all-round team effort this year,” said a delighted Collins. “And now we have the full set of trophies in the cabinet for the first time!” “Campiones, campiones,” quipped a delighted Perry.
Tom Fisken’s Tibberton side had already confirmed second position in the league, despite the fact that nearest rivals NRBL trounced the King’s Head B without dropping a frame. Mick Beech benefited from Maggie O’Brien potting the black to seal frame one and Colin Farge continued his Newport Open preparations in style by beating Chris Perry.
Charlie Hayward made it 3-0 to the visitors and Colin Pink was pushed all the way before confirming the three points. The outgoing champions sealed both doubles racks to book the rout.
With the match between the Shakespeare C and the Railway Tavern being postponed, the Junction A leapt into a commanding position to claim fourth place next week. The Norbury side dropped just one frame on the way to beating the Shakespeare B: Jane Hilditch was on fire to give the home side a deserved frame.
After two disappointing results, LSC at the Tav also have one eye on fourth place after beating the Plough at Woodseaves with the loss of just one frame at Upper Bar.
Greg Heathcote and Neil Perkins were made to work very hard for the first two frame wins against Kirk Robinson and Vicky Hipkins but Andy Miles had his head in the clouds in rack three to edge the frame against Rich Bayliss. An in-form Ian Roberts clinched the match against Tony Morris in the fourth rack, but James Morris and Robinson pulled the fifth frame back before Miles and Roberts sealed the three points in style.
The Wheatsheaf A secured an excellent 1-5 away win against the Navigation at Gnosall and the Shakespeare A continued their useful end to the season with a 1-5 victory at the Junction B.
Please remember that entries for the 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open close tomorrow (Saturday). Completed entry forms and all entry fees must be left for the Newport Pool Open, c/o Ian Roberts, at the Railway Tavern in Newport in the coming days. No entry fee means no entry to the competition.
