STAG AND NEWPORT LEGION IN NEWPORT POOL DEADLOCK
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Legion were forced to work hard for their two points at Wrockwardine Wood Football Club and are now tied on points and frame difference with Market Drayton’s Stag in the Marston’s Newport & District Pool League. The Stag actually hold the league lead courtesy of their 4-2 win over the Legion back in November.
A nail-biting contest could have gone either way in Telford, although the league leaders edged into a 0-3 lead with wins for Simon Walley, Jack Dicken and Ant Heathcote over Lewis Turner, Craig Williams and Dan Owen. Skipper Mick Beech sealed the points in the fourth against Kevin Genner, but the home team came back strongly to win both doubles frames.
The Stag stood no nonsense from King’s Head B and did their frame difference the power of good with a 0-6 win. George Allen, Mick Manning, Kyle Smith and Neil Dale put paid to Chris Perry, Adam Barnes, Lorna Phee and Ian Perry in the singles and the doubles frames were also one-way traffic.
Honeysuckle Harriers bounced back from last week’s mauling by the Stag to retain fourth place with a 6-0 win over the Haberdashers Arms. Owen Rigby, a returning Russ Woodhouse and Greg Quinn put the home team into the lead and Dean Smith secured the two points against Janet Lane. Two scrappy doubles frames also went in favour of the home side.
King’s Head A continued their forward momentum with a comfortable 0-6 victory at an icy Royal Navy Club and it was sufficient for the Chetwynd Enders to move ahead of WWFC and into fifth in the league standings. Bobby Perry, Irene Whittington, Mick Collins and Ed Keenan sealed the win in four one-sided doubles frames and there was no way back for Dan Piper, an impressive Emma Fox, Jez Price and Allan Prichett in the doubles.
Gnosall’s Horns are the favourites to win the Newport League Plate and entertained Honeysuckle Hawks. The match was a tense affair and the Hawks edged into a 2-3 lead only for the home side to snatch the last frame, courtesy of skipper Dai Smith, to seal a draw.
The Wheatsheaf have their eyes on the Newport League Plate this season and visited Junction B for the first game of the second half of the year. The Norbury side missed out on the Plate by a point and remain a distant eighth in the main league after Paul Skitt sealed a 2-4 win for the visitors in the final frame. The ‘Sheaf now lead the Plate by a point.
The Pheasant are also looking at the Plate for silverware this year, but they were held to a 3-3 draw at the Shakespeare. Barry Smith, Graham Parsons and Jess Rigby stunned the visitors by storming into a 3-0 lead against Craig Hutchinson, Joe Sayce and Gaz Davies, but the Pheasant regrouped and regained their composure. A singles win for Tom Sayce over Kim Rigby made it 3-1 and the quartet bonded well to win both doubles frames and seal a point.
There were byes for third-placed Sutherland Arms and Junction A.
