GRANT TRASK TOPS THE TIMES IN FINAL SHARJAH WARM-UP SESSION
Sunday, December 21: All 19 drivers who will start this afternoon’s Road to Sharjah-Grand Prix of Sharjah took to the water for the final one-hour warm-up session on Sunday morning.
Team Sweden’s Grant Trask carded the quickest lap of 48.594 seconds to boost his confidence before he starts the Grand Prix from sixth position this afternoon.
Marit Strømøy posted the opening lap of the session but her team-mate Bartek Marszalek was the first to break the 48.9 second barrier on his opening lap and he topped the times for much of the stint. The Victory Team duo of Shaun Torrente and Alec Weckström took to the water to carry out final checks with the Finn breaking through 50 seconds for the first time on his third lap.
Jonas Andersson left it until the session was 20 minutes old to post his solitary lap of 49.973 seconds and then team-mate Trask launched himself to the top of the leader board with that lap of 48.594 seconds.
The F1 Atlantic Team admitted it needed to find some additional pace after problems on Saturday had been diagnosed as a starter motor issue. Once replaced, Ben Jelf was hopeful that he could challenge the leading pack in the Grand Prix. He ran for 11 laps and carded a best run of 50.326 seconds.
Damon Cohen to undergo surgery this week
The Comparato F1 Team’s Damon Cohen is comfortable in a Sharjah hospital after his heavy crash during qualifying on Saturday morning.
Sterling efforts by the Osprey Rescue Team at the scene of the incident proved crucial and, once hospital staff are happy that any water potential remaining on the Australian’s lungs has been fully removed, he will undergo surgery this week to repair a fractured vertebra.
Everyone from H2O Racing and the powerboating community wish Damon a full and swift recovery during his enforced extended stay in the UAE over the holiday period.
